Day One - Marlborough MA to Ashtabula OH
This
day started with me cleaning up some work that needed to be completed before I
left on my trip. Unfortunately this involved me going to New Hampshire to
do a service call for one of my dealers. By the time I returned home it
was 1 PM. I quickly got myself geared up and ready to go. It must
have been a sign when it started to rain only moments prior to me pulling the
bike out of the garage. What made it more stressful was when I discovered
that the battery on the bike was dead. In my preparation for the trip I
had installed the GPS on my bike just the day before. I had left it on and
it had drained the battery. So I wheeled the bike to the end of the
driveway and started pushing the bike down the street where there is a small
hill. As I am doing this my neighbor Dave from across the street comes out
his front door and is laughing at me hysterically as I am in full motorcycle gear
huffing and puffing trying to get the bike to roar to life.
Fortunately there was a steeper hill near the end of the street, I hopped on and
let the clutch go and she came alive. This was a great turn of events as I
was already way behind schedule. I finally departed at 2 PM. I
figured I would get to Erie PA tonight. From the start I had decided that
my general plan was to spend the first two to three days going all interstate
highway so I could get out west quickly. This way I could spend as much
time as possible in the wide open Western states. Then I reminded myself
that this is my vacation and I need not stress myself out. I rolled out to
the Massachusetts turnpike and settled in at 80 and thought about how many
Interstate 90 signs I was going to see in the next few days.
I made a quick exit out of Massachusetts and into a brief 15 minute shower in Albany NY. I then settled into a 75 MPH ride across NY. As I passed Buffalo I started thinking about dinner and a place to stay. I made it to Erie PA around 11 PM. By 12 midnight I was at the first exit in Ohio and found myself a nice flea bag Days Inn just off the Exit. I unpacked the bike and settled into bed for the evening.
